What are the main differences between a SEO and a SEM?

The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that Search Engine Optimization is part of Search engine marketing or Search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines.

The purpose of doing a comparison between SEO and SEM, it is important to start with the definition of SEO so that it is clear for everyone what the difference between the two is.

SEO as defined by Wikipedia is The process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s ‘natural’ or un-paid (‘organic’) search results.” The industry and discipline of SEO is continually evolving to keep up with Google’s ever-changing algorithm, but one thing is constant: SEO is made up of On-Page and Off-Page (aka “On-Site” and “Off-Site”) activities as the two main pillars.

SEM as defined by Wikipedia is A form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization and advertising.” Note that compared to SEO, SEM includes the use of paid search results, such as pay per click (PPC) listings and ads. In some contexts, the term SEM is strictly used by marketers to refer to their PPC campaigns and activities.

  • When a search engine returns results some of them are paid ad. The rest are unpaid results that the search engines believe are relevant to the phrase entered into the search box. These are referred to as “organic results.”
  • Search engines have formulas, or algorithms, that help them order the list of results. The search engines constantly scour the web for new content and try to make sense of it.
  • The goal of successful SEO is to obtain a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines).
